VIP HOMEOWNER ANSWER LIBRARY · GAS LINES

What is a gas pressure test, and when do I need one?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A gas pressure test checks whether a section of gas piping holds pressure under controlled conditions. A qualified professional uses approved equipment and a procedure suited to the piping and the reason for testing. It may be requested after repairs, before service is restored or when a leak is suspected, but the exact requirement depends on the utility and local officials. Do not attempt a pressure test with improvised fittings or introduce air into an active gas system yourself. If you smell gas, leave immediately and call 911 and Oklahoma Natural Gas at 800-458-4251 from outside. For planned testing, ask VIP what the technician and utility must coordinate.
