What should I do after a storm backs up my sewer?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Stop running water and keep people and pets away from any wastewater that has entered your home. After a heavy storm, the cause might be an overloaded public system, a blocked private drain or a separate drainage issue, so do not assume every backup calls for sewer replacement. If safe, photograph the affected areas and note whether neighboring homes have the same problem. Contact your sewer utility to report any wider issue, then arrange a plumber to inspect your side of the system. Avoid opening cleanouts that may release sewage under pressure. Have contaminated areas cleaned using appropriate health precautions.
