How do I prepare plumbing for a tornado or severe-weather power outage?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Before severe weather, learn where the main water shutoff is and keep access to it clear. Store safe drinking water according to emergency guidance, know whether your home relies on an electric well pump or sump pump, and avoid assuming those devices will run during an outage. If flooding is possible, keep electrical equipment and people away from standing water. After a storm, check for obvious leaks only when the area is safe and follow any water-provider advisories. Do not enter a damaged building or operate gas equipment with a suspected leak. If you smell gas, leave immediately and call 911 and Oklahoma Natural Gas at 800-458-4251 from outside.
