VIP HOMEOWNER ANSWER LIBRARY · WATER HEATERS

How often should I flush a tank water heater?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A manufacturer may recommend periodic sediment draining or flushing, often annually, but the correct interval depends on the model, water quality, age and maintenance history. An older unit that has never been serviced may need extra caution, and flushing alone will not fix a failing tank or heating element. Check the manual or have a plumber assess the heater before opening a drain valve.
