VIP HOMEOWNER ANSWER LIBRARY · WATER HEATERS

Why is my water heater popping or rumbling?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Mineral sediment at the bottom of a tank can cause popping or rumbling during heating. Other operating problems are possible, so a noise alone does not prove the cause. If the unit leaks, overheats, or makes unusual sounds, arrange an inspection rather than assuming a flush will fix it.
