How do I unclog a toilet with a plunger?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with a flange-style toilet plunger and enough bowl water to cover the plunger cup. Make a seal and use controlled push-and-pull strokes without splashing. A toilet auger may help with some deeper toilet-trap clogs. Avoid chemical cleaners and stop if water rises toward the rim, wastewater backs up elsewhere, or repeated attempts do not work.
