Where is my sewer cleanout, and what is it for?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A sewer cleanout is an access point that lets a plumber inspect or clear a drain or sewer line without removing a toilet or opening the pipe. It may be outside near the foundation, in a yard, or in another accessible spot, depending on how the home was built. Look for a capped pipe at ground level, but do not assume every cap is a sewer cleanout. If wastewater is backed up, do not open a cap under pressure or stand in the discharge path. A plumber can locate the proper access and decide whether cleaning or a camera inspection makes sense.
