Where is my home's main water shutoff, and how do I use it?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The main shutoff may be where the service line enters the home, in a utility area, or at the meter depending on the property. A wheel-style valve typically turns clockwise to close; a lever-style ball valve is closed when the handle is perpendicular to the pipe. Never force a stuck valve or open a utility-owned meter box without authorization; call the water utility or a plumber if you cannot safely isolate the water.
