How do septic systems differ from city sewer, and who services each?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A city sewer connection carries wastewater toward a public collection system, while a septic system treats and disperses wastewater on the property. Both have drains inside the house, so a slow toilet does not reveal which system is failing. A plumber may evaluate indoor drains and the line leaving the building, while septic tanks and drain fields often need a qualified septic specialist. Check your property records if you do not know which setup you have. Do not uncover or enter a septic tank, and keep vehicles off a suspected drain field. Tell the service company what type of system you have before scheduling.
