How do I temporarily stop a pipe leak until the plumber arrives?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The safest temporary step for many supply-pipe leaks is to close the nearest working shutoff or the home's main water valve. Open a faucet if appropriate to relieve remaining pressure and move belongings away from the wet area. Use towels or a bucket to limit damage, but remember that tape or a temporary clamp may fail and should never be treated as a permanent repair. Stay away from water contacting electrical outlets, panels or appliances. Do not attempt repairs on gas piping. If the valve is stuck or water continues flooding, leave the unsafe area and request emergency plumbing help.
