How do I do a water meter test to check for a hidden leak?

Plain-English plumbing guidance for Oklahoma homeowners. A useful starting point, not a diagnosis for your home.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A water meter test can help show whether water is moving through the home's supply when nothing should be using it. First turn off faucets, appliances and irrigation that draw water; make sure toilets are not refilling. Record the meter reading or watch its low-flow indicator, then check again after a period without water use. Continued movement may indicate a leak or an unnoticed water-using device, but the test does not identify where the water is going. Do not enter a dangerous meter pit or touch utility equipment beyond normal customer access. If the reading changes unexpectedly, ask a plumber to locate the source.
